Dysprosium is a "super-magnet" element whose name literally means "hard to get" (from the Greek dysprositos). It is the invisible force behind the most powerful motors on Earth, and its scarcity makes it one of the most geopolitically sensitive materials in existence:

• The Heat Shield for Magnets: The strongest magnets in the world are Neodymium magnets, but they have a fatal flaw: they lose their magnetism when they get hot. By adding a small amount of Dysprosium, engineers can "freeze" the magnetic field in place, allowing magnets to work inside the scorching environment of an EV motor or a massive wind turbine.

• The "Terabyte" Metal: If you are reading this on a device with a hard drive, you likely owe a debt to Dysprosium. Its high magnetic susceptibility makes it a critical component in the read-heads of hard disks, allowing for the incredibly dense data storage we rely on in the age of AI.
